QuarkXPress

QuarkXPress has been the desktop publishing tool of choice for nearly 20 years. Used for a wide number of publications, Quark offers a long history of tools and abilities that many publishers have depend upon.

Scribe employees have many years of experience with QuarkXPress and can help implement your book designs and deliver printer-ready files, as well as use the Well-formed Document Workflow to take your finished files to XML or any other electronic platform that you may need.

SGML

SGML, or Standard Generalized Markup Language, is the parent of many markup languages. SGML was originally designed to enable machine-readable text to be used across large enterprises. It is rigorous enough to allow the tagging of complex documents, while flexible enough to allow for multitudes of use. Since its inception, Scribe has developed tools that are based in SGML. While others are overwhelmed by the complexity of SGML, Scribe fully understands its use and value.

Project Management

Most think of our Well-Formed Document Workflow as the key to Scribe's success in providing publishing services. While our workflow does help us become more efficient, we would be less successful without our hands-on approach to project management.

The same management that Scribe utilizes internally is available to all of our clients. We provide project management, project development, and production management services to ensure that your projects are successful.

Collaborative

The purpose of Scribe's services is to assist our clients in efficiently publishing their content. To that end, Scribe has developed a number of services to support efficient workflow, multipurpose publishing programs, and to augment our clients' expertise. These services enable publishers and others to streamline production and make better use of technology. This helps our clients to work more efficiently, increase revenues—thus, be successful in today's competitive market.

Scribe's collaborative services take three forms:

PDF

Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) is a standard for sharing electronic books across multiple platforms, while retaining the original look of the book. PDF files have a number of options, and Scribe develops many types for use in a variety of ways.

Design

Scribe offers a full range of design and illustration services. Our designers have extensive experience in print and electronic media. Scribe's design program, like all of our services. is geared toward multipurpose publishing.

Members of our staff have created all types of materials from ancillaries for education, to advertisements, and Flash-based electronic files.

We also provide art program development, including illustration, redraw, and manipulation services.

Book

In today's world, a book can take many forms. Scribe composes and typesets your print book at any point in publishing chain. We offer complete book design, typesetting, content flow into a design template, reprint work, or legacy file conversion. We will typeset using the program that you desire.

When typesetting, we adhere to a strict set of style and tagging rules. Our books are easy to multipurpose and redesign. We also have an incredibly fast turnaround time.

Indexing

Scribe provides a full range of indexing services for print and electronic publications. We can provide indexing services at many stages of the publishing chain, including at manuscript, pages, or electronic stages. The indexes we create are properly designed, copyedited, set, and proofread.

Scribe provides indexing services to both publishers and authors. We create multilevel or "thinking" indexes and keyword indexes, or apply semantic tagging.

Developmental Editing

Scribe has a unique approach to developmental editing. When publishers develop a book, they consider the audience, profit and loss, marketing, technical print requirements, author's intention, and how the book fits imprint identity. Scribe adds to the mix an acute awareness of how a book will function in the electronic environment. Thus, Scribe's developmental editing services result in a clear, coherent, readable publication that also works in electronic publishing.

Translation

If a client has an original work written in a foreign language, Scribe can help make it available in English. We accurately render the text of the original language into the target language (English), at an acceptable level of native readability in the target language. The process involves the translator, the author, and the editor in a dynamic process until we achieve the desired results. We do not employ automated translation programs in this process, because the content is far too complex and the meanings far too subtle for a computer program to translate it correctly.
