Multipurpose Editing

Multipurpose editing refers to the type of editing required to tap into the power of multipurpose publishing. When we multipurpose edit, we edit content to make function best within print and electronic platforms (including Web, e-book, etc.).

Multipurpose editing is the process of manipulating content so that it is clearly accessible within all types of media. This involves focus on structure, organization, navigation, information display, and modes of entry (like semantic tagging and indexing).

Microsoft Word—A Powerful Editorial Tool

Scribe's default word processing software is Microsoft Word, primarily because most clients deliver content to us as Word documents. Since our multipurpose publishing philosophy predisposes us to work within the parameters of the technology and tools already employed by our clients, our editorial process utilizes the versions of Microsoft Word used by our clients. On the one hand, that means we utilize Word's powerful editing features. On the other hand, it means we also develop and use tools that complement Word's capabilities.

Well-Formed Document vs. XML Workflow

Every project that Scribe undertakes goes through three stages:

QuarkXPress

QuarkXPress has been the desktop publishing tool of choice for nearly 20 years. Used for a wide number of publications, Quark offers a long history of tools and abilities that many publishers have depend upon.

Scribe employees have many years of experience with QuarkXPress and can help implement your book designs and deliver printer-ready files, as well as use the Well-formed Document Workflow to take your finished files to XML or any other electronic platform that you may need.

DTD Creation

Document Type Definition (DTD) is the set of declarations used within XML and SGML to define the elements and entities within the content. Essentially, a DTD is the blueprint of your publishing program. Scribe possess extensive experience developing DTDs that form the foundation for electronic and traditional print programs. Scribe is experienced in working with complex multilingual, scientific, and mathematics content.

SGML

SGML, or Standard Generalized Markup Language, is the parent of many markup languages. SGML was originally designed to enable machine-readable text to be used across large enterprises. It is rigorous enough to allow the tagging of complex documents, while flexible enough to allow for multitudes of use. Since its inception, Scribe has developed tools that are based in SGML. While others are overwhelmed by the complexity of SGML, Scribe fully understands its use and value.

Project Management

Most think of our Well-Formed Document Workflow as the key to Scribe's success in providing publishing services. While our workflow does help us become more efficient, we would be less successful without our hands-on approach to project management.

The same management that Scribe utilizes internally is available to all of our clients. We provide project management, project development, and production management services to ensure that your projects are successful.

Collaborative

The purpose of Scribe's services is to assist our clients in efficiently publishing their content. To that end, Scribe has developed a number of services to support efficient workflow, multipurpose publishing programs, and to augment our clients' expertise. These services enable publishers and others to streamline production and make better use of technology. This helps our clients to work more efficiently, increase revenues—thus, be successful in today's competitive market.
